"Teamwork" makes the "Dream Work". I have been hearing this quite a bit lately and although I've never used the phrase it is starting to grow on me. I own a business by myself. Self-employed. Sole Proprietor. But what I have always known is I couldn't do what I do without my employees. I struggle with micro-managing and always have. I want my shop to look a certain way and I have definite standards for service, work ethic and overall performance. I have learned that being detail oriented is good but not allowing others to try is not. Sometimes I (and I think all of us) have the attitude that I can just do it quicker or I know if I do it then it will be done right. Well, maybe it will but I didn't get to where I am without trying, failing and re-trying! This year I have a bit of a new attitude. I want to get back into mentoring my employees in a way. I only say that because past employees have said I was a good mentor. But I feel like I have lost a bit of that attitude. I think because there are so many new elements to having a shop these days that I got a bit overwhelmed the last few years. I never had to think about online or social media and those are HUGE beasts all by themselves. They can be all consuming and take up so much of my time! So, I am starting a new work schedule and I am sticking to it! I have designated days for particular aspects of my job. One day for social media planning, blogs...etc. One day for photo taking (social media, online...etc) . And the other 3 days will be for the shop. Just being present for customers, merchandising or whatever comes along. Of course things will shift from time to time but that's the gist. I will keep you posted on how it's going. My goal is to try this out for two months and see if it helps. I want to be more focused in each area of my job and I felt as though each day had a little bit of everything in it and it was becoming overwhelming. Today is a Social media day so I am currently writing this blog. :)
This is my business tip for the week. If you want to follow along I plan on having a business tip every week. #businesstipsbyheather
